Mitzvah Day 2023 at NNLS
Mitzvah Day 2023 at NNLS
What is Mitzvah Day?
A Mitzvah, literally, is a commandment in Jewish law. However, it is often used to mean a good deed or an act of kindness, which is an integral part of Jewish life and is the basis for Mitzvah Day.
Mitzvah Day is the UK’s largest faith-led day of social action. Over 55,000 people around the world come together to give our time, to make a difference to the community around us. We introduce people to social action, to their neighbours and to local charities, setting up projects, which address real needs. Jewish-led, we bring together people of all faiths and backgrounds, to volunteer side-by-side, building longstanding, genuine relationships.
How can I get involved?
This year, Mitzvah Day takes place on Sunday, 19th November and at NNLS we have a range of Education and Community initiatives running all morning. Whether you would like to join our book swap, donate clothes or help us clean up Dollis Brook, there's something for everyone and all ages are welcome.
We are particularly looking for members to volunteer to help us run our Community programming on the day, from 9am-12.30pm at the shul. Please register using the form below.
community projects
NNLS Allotment | 9.30am-12.30pm
Calling all keen gardeners! Join us for a hands-on morning of transforming the NNLS allotment. We will be weeding, digging over and planting bulbs. Sign up below to let us know you're coming.
Please wear outdoor clothing, boots and bring your gardening tools.
Book Swap | 9.30am-12.30pm
Book swaps can be a great way to share your love of reading and discover fantastic new stories, and also give children the opportunity to choose a book for themselves that excite them and start to build a lifelong love of reading.
Bring along your pre-loved books (all genres and conditions welcome) and explore our community's shared collection. If you are unavailable on the day but would still like to contribute books to the Book Swap, please contact Gianina to arrange a drop-off.
Please sign up below to volunteer to help us run the Book Swap on the day.
Dollis Brook Clean-Up | 9.30am
Are you enthusiastic about caring for the environment and helping out our local community? We are organising a litter pick-up at Dollis Brook. This promises to be a fun outdoor activity for all the family. Meet us in the NNLS foyer at 9.30am and we will walk to Dollis Brook together. Please sign up below to let us know you're coming (and volunteer to lead the group if you are interested).
Please wear outdoor clothing and comfortable walking shoes.
Kehilatainu | 10am-12.30pm with a short break
We are also looking for Parents, Haderech Teens and Noam Volunteers to assist our Kehilatainu team (particularly with Gimmel's activities) on the day. Please see the planned activities and sign up below.
Donation Station | 9.30am-12.30pm
We are collecting items to donate to two fantastic charities: Homeless Action in Barnet (HAB) and Sebby's Corner. Sebby's Corner believe no child should go without basic essentials. They are here to provide support to Israeli families who are escaping the war and are temporarily in the UK with their children.
Please sign up below to volunteer as a driver to drop the collected items off at 12.30pm (N12 for HAB and EN5 for Sebby's Corner). Please note that we are collecting bulky items such as buggies, so you must have a large vehicle with ample storage space. You can also volunteer to run our Donation Station at the shul, which involves sorting through and categorising the donated items.
Please drop off unwanted and pre-loved items from the categories below:
