A message from Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg

'How can we discuss being redeemed from slavery, when Hamas still holds 130 men, women and children in the most vile captivity?

How can we celebrate our freedom, when our brothers and sisters are not free?’

Our community has ‘adopted’ Alon Ohel and Avinatan Or who are still held captive in Gaza. (You may also be close to family members of other hostages.)

Here are some suggestions for including them at the Seder:

  • You may decide to leave an empty chair at your table with a picture.
  • You may choose a symbolic object to add to your Seder plate and explain the significance of that choice during the Seder.
  • You may choose to place an added cup next to the cup of Elijah and explain that they and all the other hostages and their families are waiting for their redemption.
  • You may prefer simply to speak about Alon and Avinatan and the other hostages at the Seder.

Please consider including the prayer which we recite every Shabbat in the Synagogue: (The English is not an exact translation, but closely follows the Hebrew)

‘Our brothers and sisters from the whole House of Israel in distress and captivity, on land or at sea, may the All-Present God have mercy upon you and bring you out from confinement to freedom, from darkness to light, and from captivity to redemption, soon, speedily, indeed now.’

We pray for you all, the hostages and your families, from Israel and from every other country.

We pray, too, for the safe deliverance from misery and injury of all innocent people, trapped in Gaza and elsewhere amidst the horrors of war.

May God, who sends rescue to those caught in storms at sea, and salvation to those at the threshold of death, answer our prayers, and let us say ‘Amen.’
